The Business Research Company predicts the global automotive camera market will climb to $18.9 billion by 2030, with an 11.6% CAGR. Fueled by heightened safety expectations and rapid innovation, the industry is moving quickly toward multi-sensor architectures and high-performance GMSL interfaces.

At DFI, we are the computing core of this revolution. Our In-Vehicle systems and AI inference systems are engineered for robust multi-channel support, ensuring seamless GMSL camera integration. By enabling synchronized, high-bandwidth transmission across multiple video streams, we deliver the stability and compute performance required for advanced ADAS and 360° situational awareness. Transforming raw data into real-time AI inference—that’s the DFI edge.

What is GMSL?

GMSL (Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link) is a high-speed, low-latency transmission technology that carries video, control signals, and power over a single cable. GMSL and GMSL2 are widely adopted in automotive—and increasingly in industrial and embedded imaging—because they enable high-resolution video plus a bidirectional control channel over a single cable. Power delivery is commonly implemented via Power-over-Coax (PoC) system design.

Compared with MIPI CSI-2 (D-PHY), which is typically treated as a short-reach interface (often ~30 cm-class guidance at high data rates), GMSL supports much longer cable runs—often 15 m or more depending on the channel—making it practical when the camera cannot be placed next to the processor. Thin coax also simplifies routing in space-constrained designs, especially automotive.

How does GMSL benefit AI applications?

With throughput of up to 3.125 Gbps (GMSL) per lane, and up to 6  Gbps (GMSL2) per lane, GMSL enables fast, low-latency data transfer—a requirement for industrial AI use cases where real-time decisions matter, such as autonomous systems and manufacturing robotics. It’s especially effective for AI vision applications that must continuously sense and react to their surroundings, including UGVs (Unmanned Ground Vehicles), AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

Beyond speed, GMSL also solves a key integration challenge: distance. It can maintain signal quality over cable runs up to 15 metres, whereas MIPI/CSI is typically limited to around 300 mm, which can be restrictive for machine builders in embedded and industrial designs. The continued evolution of GMSL technology is also enabling AI applications—built on higher bandwidth, lower latency, and longer-reach video transmission—to unlock even greater potential for real-time perception, reliable decision-making, and scalable deployment.

Below is a summary of the key capabilities of GMSL1, GMSL2, and GMSL3:

  • GMSL1 provides stable, low-latency links for in-vehicle video transmission over coaxial cable, supporting up to 3.125 Gbps—enough for uncompressed 1080p60 with typical latency < 1 µs.

  • GMSL2 increases bandwidth and reach to 6 Gbps over about 15 m, supports 4K, and improves reliability with stronger data integrity checks—ideal for bandwidth- and quality-critical applications.

  • GMSL3 scales to 12 Gbps forward and 187 Mbps reverse, enabling uncompressed 4K90. It can also carry up to three 4K streams over a single PoC cable for real-time 3D imaging and surround view.
